About Guyana

If you are coming to Guyana for the first time here are a few important things you may find useful.

Georgetown's Cheddi Jagan airport is situated within the Rain Forest and subject to frequent mists which have been known to delay arrival and departure times.

As you enter the arrivals hall you are greeted by uniformed airport Taxi Drivers, and a number of porters, locally referred to as 'Red Cap' boys, who work at the airport to assist travellers with heavy baggage.

I usually ask one of the helpful airport Taxi Drivers to help when I require assistance, as I know he will tend safely to my luggage and that all of it will arrive at my destination! Located some 33km from Georgetown, a taxi ride into the capital takes around 45 minutes and will cost you around US$20.

Airport cabs are considered to be safe and friendly with a helpful driver. Tipping a driver for exceptional service is always appreciated.

All visitors require passports. A Visa is necessary with the exception of the following: British Commonwealth Countries, USA, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Japan, Korea. Visitors are advised to check with their nearest embassy, consulate or travel agent.

The main Towns of Guyana are straddled along the coast and the vast majority of the country's hinterland is covered in Primary Rainforest, most of which is yet to be explored. The population of the country is less than one million, concentrated mainly in the Capital, Georgetown and other coastal towns.

Guyana has a tropical climate with a high rainfall, though most of this falls as showers, especially during the rainy season from May to July. The coast is cooler with pleasant sea breezes.
